“Miyabi to Aware (Chivalrous Grace and Sorrow)” Exhibition has started
From today, Oct. 07 (Mon.), “Miyabi to Aware (Chivalrous Grace and Sorrow)” Exhibition (Oct. 07 – Dec. 7, 2019 ) has started. Beginning with the paintings of Yasuda Yukihiko, Kikuchi Keigetsu redolent of Japanese beauty and spirit, and also fresh and limpid Sho (Calligraphy) of Sasaki Nobutsuna, Senge Takatomi and others color the exhibition. From the artworks of the painters who have unceasingly continued studying Japanese history, it is possible to follow what they have “Sought after.” Along with the autumn wind, we would be delighted to have you view the spirit of “Miyabi to Aware.”

This time, to celebrate nearly 10th year of the starting the activities of Shigyo Sosyu Collection and Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, our periodical publication booklet “ARTIS” (meaning Art in Latin) is issued. The contents will be to introduce our Collection from various approach bimonthly. The feature of this issue is starting from the distinctive content of an interview article on “Miyabi to Aware” to Shigyo Sosyu , and in the opening page, introduces an episode on “Kurama-yama (Mount Kurama)” depicted by Yasuda Yukihiko, and also the letters by Toshima Yasumasa will be entered as the serialized article.

Advance notice of the next Exhibition: “Inner Power –Fire and Earth–” Exhibition (Jun. 24 ~ Sep. 28, 2019).
“Zen and Bushido” Exhibition which has been greatly favored will conclude on Jun. 15 (Sat.), and for the display change, both Shigyo Sosyu Collection and Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa will be closed from Jun. 17 (Mon.) ~ 22 (Sat.). Next Exhibition is titled “Inner Power – Fire and Earth–,” and the artworks overflowing with the power of creation which is the quintessence of Shigyo Sosyu Collection will be displayed. Starting from the leading western art collection such as Toshima Yasumasa and Yamaguch Takeo, they will invite us to the origin of “Inner Power,” and to the mystery of the respective works.
The new form is given birth — by the power of Creation from the sky into the depth of the humans, and humans having Fire and Earth in one’s hands. This Power of the Beginning is endless. Cosmic-energy destroys and creates everything transcending the limit of matters.

“Zen and Bushido” Exhibition” (Period: Mar. 15 ~ Jun. 15, Sat.) displays are changed.
“Zen and Bushido” Exhibition” is receiving highly favorable response, and as we have ended the first half of the period (Mar.18~May 9), displays are changed for the second half of the period (May 14~Jun. 15). Over 20 new works including the first display of pictorial art and calligraphic works are exhibited. The first displayed works are such as a pair of “Dai Nanko” and “Sho Nanko” by Japanese Painter Kikuchi Keigetsu, calligraphy of Seki Daitetsu, Zen priest of Soto-sect (Celebrating the republishing of [Don’t Eat, if Not Able to Eat!] ). And also the works of Hakuin, Yasuda Yukihiko, Yamaoka Tesshu, Nantenbo are changed. [Kuenandara Kuuna (Don’t Eat, if Not Able to Eat!)] by the barefooted Zen Priest Seki Daitetsu will be republished.
From Goma Shobo Shinsha, [Don’t Eat, if Not Able to Eat! ] (262 pages in superior binding duodecimo, ¥1,800 excluding tax) by the barefooted Zen Priest Seki Daitetsu will be published in early June. Profile of the Chief Priest Yokota Nanrei
Born in 1964, in Shingu-city, Wakayama Prefecture. In 1987, graduated from University of Tsukuba. Entered into the Buddhist priesthood while attending the University. As soon as graduating, began to practice Zen in Kennin-ji in Kyoto. From 1991, practiced in Engaku-ji. In 1999, became a Zen master of Engaku-ji. In 2010, took the post of the chief administrator of the Engaku-ji division of the Rinzai-sect of Buddhism. In 2017, took the post of the president of Hanazono University. His major literary works are [Learning the Wisdom of the Living Way from the Distinguished Zen Priests], [Zen Words to Enlighten the Life], Collection of Colloquy with Mr. Kagiyama Hidezaburo [To Live the One and Only Life] and others.

Pofile of Sahori Nobuya
Born in Osaka in 1933. Grew up in Nara Prefecture, and graduated from Tezukayama High School. Presently, he is enrolled in the Medical Department of Kobe University. By the influence of his father, who is an ophthalmologist, and embracing high esteem for the distinguished doctors such as Takagi Kanehiro, and Nakai Hisao, and having interest in life, he aspired to learn medical science. On the other hand, he opened his eyes to nihilism through witnessing the polluted water of former Yodo-river, and having the awareness to the problem, he began to focus himself to literary works. He began reading the literary works of Shigyo Sosyu from 18 years old, and during his entrance exam preparation period, he thoroughly read [Ikuru (To Live)], [Tomo-yo (Dear Friends)] and [Kongen-e (To the Origin)]. Afterword, mainly reading Shigyo Sosyu related books and he enthusiastically read Mishima Yukio, Origuchi Shinobu, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Abe Kobo, Uchimura Kanzo, Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Cioran, Camus and others. In the summer of 2016, taking his inner imbroglio as the opportunity, he visited Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumas and began the exchange with Mr. Shigyo Sosyu.

“Now, Seek after Miguel de Unamuno―Homage to Unamuno” Exhibition will be held at Embassy of Spain in Japan (Period: Sept. 12 ~ Oct. 9, 2018).
To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Establishment of Japan-Spain Diplomatic Relations and the 800th Anniversary of the Foundation of Salamanca University, “Now, Seek after Miguel de Unamuno” Exhibition will be held at Embassy of Spain in Japan. Miguel de Unamuno is the leading thinker, author and poet of Spain, and also was the president of Salamanca University. This Year being the anniversary year of Spain, under the auspices of Salamanca University and Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, and the cooperation of Embassy of Spain in Japan and Unamuno Resident Museum, we will comprehensively trace the personality of Unamuno through the photographic records and sketches which Unamuno depicted himself, and the acceptance and the transition of the translations of Unamuno’s literary works in Japan, and also introducing the city of Salamanca. And as homage, we will also be exhibiting the artworks of painter Toshima Yasumasa, who deeply cherished Unamuno, in combination with Unamuno’s words. At Toshima Yasumasa Memorial Gallery (Kojimachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), “Spirits of Japan—The World of Nature in the Sight of Toshima Yasumasa—“ Exhibition (Aug. 13 (Mon.) ,2018~ Dec. 1 (Sat.), 2018) will be held. Trailing the backlight in the Japanese soft and gentle world of nature, and guided into the depth of woods, Toshima has seen within the beauty of reefs his own life and death. What has the painter, who in his later years has tried to express the state of mind of Sumi-painting in Western painting, seen in Japan? We will follow his locus through the display of photographs of Buddhist image of Nara, which he has taken in his young days, and Noh mask made after he went over to Spain and others. “Now, Seek after Miguel de Unamuno—Homage to Unamuno by the Japanese Painter Toshima Yasumasa” Exhibition has opened at Spanish-Japanese Cultural Center in Salamanca.
On May 17 (Thurs.), 2018, “Now, Seek after Miguel de Unamuno—Homage to Unamuno by the Japanese Painter Toshima Yasumasa” Exhibition has opened at “Empress Michiko Hall” in Spanish-Japanese Cultural Center, affiliated with Salamanca University (Period: May 18–June 15, 2018). At the Opening Ceremony, celebrating the 800th Anniversary of Foundation of Salamanca University, Vice-president Mr. Enrique Cavero Morán, First-secretary to the Japanese Embassy Mr. Suzuki Akira, Head-officer of Spanish-Japanese Cultural Center Mr. José – Abel Flores, Deputy-director of Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, Mayumi Shigyo have attended and they have given their congratulatory address celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Establishment of Japan-Spain Diplomatic Relation, the 800th Anniversary of Foundation of Salamanca University and the Opening of the Exhibition to Link the Interchange of both countries. Violinist Ms. Lina Tur Bonet also celebrated Toshima Yasumasa by playing Bach’s Saraband and other pieces. And there were many Japanese who came all the way from Japan to attend this opening ceremony. On 18 (Fri.), the next day, at Salinas Hall, traditionally used for the lecture of music in the historical structure of Escuelas Menores on the campus of Salamanca University, under the joint auspices of Salamanca University and Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, celebrating Unamuno and Toshima, concert by Ms. Lina Tur Bonet and Mr. Eduardo Fernández was held in the presence of the president and his wife of Salamanca University.

”Now, Seek after Miguel de Unamuno” Exhibition (Period: May 18~June 15, 2018, in Salamanca, Spain) will be held at Spanish-Japanese Cultural Center in Salamanca University in Spain.
To celebrate the Establishment of Japan-Spain Diplomatic Relation, and the 800th Anniversary of Foundation of Salamanca University, “Now, Seek after Miguel de Unamuno―Homage to Unamuno by the Japanese Painter Toshima Yasumasa” Exhibition will be held at Spanish-Japanese Cultural Center (Centro Cultural Hispano-Japonés in Salamanca, Spain). Toshima was greatly influenced by the literary works of Miguel de Unamuno, the leading thinker, author and poet of Spain, and continued painting the people and the scenery of Spain for nearly 30 years. As this year being the celebrating year of Spain, the Homage Exhibition to Unamuno by Toshima Yasumasa will be held, under the Auspices of: Salamanca University and Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, in Collaboration with: Embassy of Spain in Japan and Unamuno Resident Museum. The combination of Unamuno’s Words and Toshima Yasumasa’s Paintings will be exhibited, and the acceptance and transition of the translation of Unamuno’s literary works and others will be introduced. Exhibition will be held at “Empress Michiko Hall,” named after Her Imperial Majesty the Empress Michiko, of Spanish-Japanese Cultural Center, located in San Boal Palace of the sixteenth century, possessed by University of Salamanca. Furthermore, the Exhibition at Embassy of Spain will be held in September of this year. We will announce the schedule accordingly. We will be looking forward for your visit to the exhibition.

[The Christ of Velázquez] (Written by Miguel de Unamuno) Translation supervised by Shigyo Sosyu will be published.
To celebrate the Friendship of the 150th Anniversary of the Establishment of Japan―Spain Diplomatic Relations, and the 800th Anniversary of Foundation of Salamanca University, one of the oldest University in Europe, in 2018, the religious poem by Miguel de Unamuno [The Christ of Velázquez] (Translation supervised by Shigyo Sosyu / Translated by Abe Misaki / Comment by Juan Masiá) will be on sale with the complete translation accomplished for the first time in Japan. This religious poem is the one, which Unamuno himself highly valued among his works. It is consisted of 89 cantos of religious poems, which Unamuno created meditating in front of [Christ Crucified] painted by the leading Spanish painter Velázquez. In these poems, the quintessence of religious spirit deriving from the Spanish mystic thought such as John of Cross, Saint Teresa of Ávila, and the soul of the Spanish Race are hidden within them. We would be delighted if you would take it in your hands.

“In the Threshold between Abstract and Figurative” Exhibition 〈Feb. 26 (Mon.) 2018 ~ Aug. 4 (Sat.) 2018〉 will be held at Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa (Kouji-machi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo). To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Establishment of Japan and Spain Diplomatic Relations, and the 800th Anniversary of the Foundation of Salamanca University in 2018, [Philosophy of Passion ― Unamuno and the Battle of “Life”] by Sasaki Takashi has been supervised by Shigyo Sosyu and will be published by Hosei University Press. It will be the definitive book to know the leading Philosopher, Poet, representing the modern Spanish Spirit, Miguel De Unamuno (1864~1936). It approaches his great Human Magnetism and Depth, covering his life confronting the turbulent time from Spanish-American War to Spanish Civil War, and burning his Life continuously on Learning, Critique, Artistic works. It is a revised and substantially enlarged edition of the great book by Sasaki Takashi [Philosophy of Don Quixote―Thought and Life of Unamuno―](Published in 1976, by Kodansha), which Shigyo Sosyu kept reading as his favorite book. It is a rewarding book with additional essays including the literary comparative of “Unamuno and Soseki,” three new essays and others.

“Path to the Creation -Camino a la Creación-“ Exhibition will be held.
“Path to the Creation -Camino a la Creación-” Exhibition 〈Sept. 1, (Fri.) ~ Feb. 3, (Sat.)〉 will be held at Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa (Koji-machi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo). In this exhibition, the process of creation of Toshima Yasumasa’s works up to the completion is being followed, by displaying the passing phases of form and changes in expression of his oil paintings and sculptures, and the completed works with the combination of valuable materials during his production. These materials were originally recorded by Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa with the cooperation of Toshima Yasumasa in his lifetime. Numerous materials such as unpublished terracotta figures, the early stage of oil painting when he began painting will be displayed. We cordially await for your visit to the Gallery.

Violin Concert by Ms. Lina Tur Bonet was held as one part of “Spain in the Sight of Toshima Yasumasa” Exhibition.
On May 19, 2017, the leading Spanish violinist Ms. Lina Tur Bonet held her first concert before her debut in Japan at Embassy of Spain in Japan. This concert was a first attempt to play music in the presence of the paintings of Toshima Yasumasa displayed in “Spain in the Sight of Toshima Yasumasa” Exhibition held in Instituto Cervantes de Tokio. In this concert, Bach’s Violin Sonata “Chaconne”, which Toshima was fond of listening, and Poulenc’s Violin and Piano Sonata (piano by Daniel Kujavec) dedicated to the leading poet of Granada García Lorca, and others were played. Ms. Bonet drew much inspiration from the art of Toshima Yasumasa and dedicated her homage to Toshima.

Profile of Ms. Lina Tur Bonet
She has actively performed as a concertmistress in various orchestra in Europe. And she frequently performed at the famous concert halls such as the Musikverein, Wiener Konzerthaus, Wigmore Hall London, The Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam. She has played under the baton of Abbado, Gardiner, Harding, Christie, Minkowski and such, and played with The Musicians of the Louvre, Les Arts Florissants, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Mozart Orchestra and other orchestras. She has studied violin at University of Freiburg in Germany and University of Vienna in Austria. And at present, she is actively taking part in music education in foreign countries. From 2005 to 2016, she taught as a professor of violin in Spain. And is teaching the advanced class in Katarina Gurska Music education foundation in Madrid.

“Spain in the Sight of Toshima Yasumasa” Exhibition at Instituto Cervantes Tokio, and “Toshima Yasumasa ― Vestiges in Japan ―” at Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa will be held.
At Instituto Cervantes Tokio, Spanish government-managed culture―education facility, “Spain in the Sight of Toshima Yasumasa” Exhibition (May 12 (Fri.) ~ June 10 (Sat.) 2017, closed on Sundays and holidays, open 11:00 ~ 18:00), will be held. Toshima spent nearly thirty years in Spain gazing and kept depicting its natural features and people. His artworks together with the numerous photographic films taken by Toshima will be exhibited. Focusing on scenery of Spain and portraits, about 70 works (including replacing works) will be exhibited.
During this period, in Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, Toshima’s artworks before going to Spain and his last years works in Japan titled “Toshima Yasumasa ― Vestiges in Japan” Exhibition (May 12 (Fri.) ~ Aug. 19 (Sat.) 2017, closed on Sundays and holidays, open 11:00 ~ 18:00), about 50 works will be exhibited. His sketches and nudes, and also the works depicting woods of forests and shrines in his Musashino Art University days, furthermore, works depicted after returning to Japan will be exhibited. Notable features of “Toshima Yasumasa ― Vestiges in Japan” Exhibition
Toshima Yasumasa diligently practiced sketching and depicted many nudes in his Musashino Art University days. Having recognized of his gift by Aso Saburo and Yamaguchi Takeo, precursors at Musashino Art University, because of his fervent artistic agony, he chose Spain as the place of his work at last.
In this exhibition, many of his sketches in his young days and nudes in his assistant of sculpture days, through which Toshima works were being formed, will be exhibited. And we also pursue the vestiges of Toshima in Japan focusing on the works of series of Suwa quince, portraits of Shigyo Sosyu and sculpture in his last years returning from Spain.

[Hiten (Sorrow of the Heavens)]Collection of poems by Miura Giichi will be republished.
Collection of poems by Miura Giichi [Hiten (Sorrow of the Heavens)] will be published. Miura Giichi is a personage known to have devoted himself to the development of defeated Japan and composed jewels of Waka poems manifesting the soul of Japan all through his life. Shigyo Sosyu highly esteemed Miura Giichi from his young days, and sensed romanticism the Japanese has continuously succeeded from antiquity in his Waka, and has enthusiastically read [Hiten]. However, this [Hiten] was ceased publication for long and rather difficult to obtain it at present. This republication is a definitive edition incliding all of Waka published in [Hiten] in prewar and postwar period, and furthermore, Waka of [Zoku-Hiten (Sequel of Hiten)] organized privately by his bereaved family after his death is included. Shigyo Sosyu has contributed words on book cover band and also contributed a writing “On Republication of [Hiten].” We will appreciate it if you take this book in your hands.

In this literary work, the unique theory of “Combustion of Life” is fully narrated by various themes of science, philosophy, living, art and others. Booklet “The Art of Passion” (KODANSHA EDITORIAL LTD.) introducing the writings, which express the art thought of Shigyo Sosyu, combined with the works of Shigyo Sosyu Collection (numerous color illustration) is being issued. This booklet is composed of three sections. In Section One, the consecutive interview articles titled “The Art of Passion,” published in the monthly opinion magazine [Seiron] (Nov. 2013~Jan. 2014), in which the fundamental thought constituting Shigyo Sosyu Collection is being spoken. To celebrate the publication of “Solitary Realism―The Art of Toshima Yasumasa―,” the lecture by Professor Koike Hisako, Faculty of Literature, Department of Philosophy, Kokugakuin University, titled ‘Toshima Yasumasa The Stratum of Existence―Encounter and Recurrence’ (by Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa) held at Instituto Cervantes Tokio, the Spanish National Culture and Education Facility will be issued as a booklet. Professor Koike Hisako, the leading authority in the study of medieval art history has contemplated Toshima‘s art from the perspective of art history. And by comparing with Velázquez, Rouault and Spanish religious sculptures et al. that Toshima must have appreciated and it retraces his footsteps.

‘Doku o Kurae (Eat the Poison)’ written by Shigyo Sosyu is printed in “Rou ni Manabu (Learn in Old Age),” a book of joint authorship, will be published.
In this book, the word ‘Rou (Old Age)’ is grasped in the context embracing query of “How to Age.” Five authors who are active in various circles speak on the aging of humans in their own unique viewpoint. As one of the authors, Shigyo Sosyu casts a theory of ‘Doku o Kurae (Eat the Poison) as an antithesis to the presently prevailing erroneous concept of ‘Growing Old.’ Shigyo Sosyu speaks on the righteous way of ‘to Age’ and how one should aim to live in his unique life theory of ‘Rou (Old Age).’ “Rou ni Manabu (Learn in Old Age)” is scheduled to be on sale at the end of May.

Toshima Yasumasa Postcard Collection, the first set of series will be on sale.
The first set of the choice selection of postcards from numerous magnetic paintings of Toshima Yasumasa will be on sale from April 1(Fri). We will be introducing a set of 8 postcards every month in series. Different paintings are serialized every month for extended period, so it may be accumulated as the postcard collection. As it is a standard postcard size, it may be mailed with a ¥62 stamp. Magnetism of Toshima’s Art is profoundly condensed in these postcards.

Publication Lecture on “Solitary Realism-The Art of Toshima Yasumasa-” will be held.
“Solitary Realism-The Art of Toshima Yasumasa-” (by Shigyo Sosyu, published by KODANSHA EDITORIAL LTD.) is scheduled to be published in mid-March. To celebrate this publication, the lecture by the leading authority on Western art history Ms. Koike Hisako (Professor of Kokugakuin University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Philosophy) will be held at Cervantes Institute, Spanish Government-managed in Tokyo. She has contributed a thesis “Toshima Yasumasa-Stratum of Existence-” for this book. In this lecture, she will speak on “Toshima Art” in the stream of art history, from the academic view point. ”Solitary Realism-The Art of Toshima Yasumasa-” by Shigyo Sosyu is being published.
“Solitary Realism -The Art of Toshima Yasumasa-” is the title of the book introducing the art works and the life of Toshima Yasumasa, in a definitive edition is being published by KODANSHA EDITORIAL LTD.
This book introduces in color printing, a numerous works of Toshima with the artistic essays and poetry on Toshima’s art by Shigyo Sosyu. And also, contribution thesis by the leading authority on Western art history, Professor Koike Hisako of Kokugakuin University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Philosophy is recorded. The quintessence of Toshima’s art and his life of accomplishing the noble solitude, with the most detailed chronology and photographs are compiled into a book.

[Unmei e no Ai (Love of Fate) –Amor fati-] Exhibition is now on display at Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa Annex.
[Unmei e no Ai (Love of Fate)- Amor fati-] is "The way of Life to sustain <Kokou (Noble Solitude)> , that is accepting one's own Karma, Live only by oneself and Die by oneself". This is the fundamental Thought constituting Sosyu Collection.
Together with the Exhibition of [Solitary Realism – The Art of Toshima Yasumasa-] held in Embassy of Spain in Japan, the main theme is [Unmei e no Ai (Love of Fate)] which sustained the Passion for the Art and its [Kokou (Noble Solitude)]. The works of Toshima Yasumasa and Sosyu Collection are exhibited accordingly. From Sosyu Collection, impressive works of Toyama Mitsuru, Takahashi Deisyu, Yasuda Yukihiko, Yamaguchi Takeo, Hirano Ryo, et al. are displayed. (Displayed works may change during this exhibition). The choice selection from Toshima Yasumasa's paintings is reproduced into 8 Art Cards. They appear in the rough texture of oil paint canvas, and their mat-finish lusters are picturesque. On the reverse side of each cards, words of Toshima Yasumasa or Shigyo Sosyu are inserted. They are 2L size (178 x 27mm) cards.
As they are non-standard-large-size post cards, they may be suitable for display in frames.

[Bi ni totte, Gi towa nanika (For Beauty, what is Eternal Truth?) – Sosyu Collection - ]
Exhibition is currently displayed at the exhibition space of Shigyo Sosyu Collection, Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa in Kouji-machi.
The motto of Sosyu Collection [Gi narazaru Mono wa kekkyoku Bi dewanai (Not Eternally True one is ultimately Not Beautiful)] is a quotation from the calligraphy of Takamura Kotaro. This is exactly the spirit of [Yugoku no Geijyutsu (Art of Sorrowful Patriotism)] in which Shigyo Sosyu himself has accumulated the works of Japanese Souls, who lamented, cherished and combusted their lives for Japan, and pass them down the generations.
In this Exhibition, the main theme is [Gi ni tsuranukareta Bi (Beauty penetrated by Eternal Truth)]. Yasuda Yukihiko, Mishima Yukio, Takamura Koutaro, Michishige Shinkyo, and many other collections are displayed. We await for your visit.

[Musashifuchu-Five Fiery Oil Painters Exhibition] Paintings of Toshima Yasumasa were displayed.
The theme was [Fervor and Richness] of Paintings. Toshima Yasumasa, as one of the oil painters who had connection with Fuchu, was introduced as the painter of [Roaring and Wailing of the Soul is Being Heard] and 23 selected paintings were displayed.
[Man of Albayzín – Image of Miguel], Toshima's leading painting in his time in Spain, was used as posters, tickets and also as advertising stickers in Keio-line vehicles.

The extensive space of Fuchu Art Museum has realized the large 100 size painting, which Toshima Yasumasa painted in his thirties, to be displayed for the first time. [Sekka no Katachi (A Form of Petrifaction)], [Nazuke-enu Mono (Unnamable One)] and others. Please enjoy his major life works as well as his first displayed works.
