Profile of the Chief Priest Yokota Nanrei
Born in 1964, in Shingu-city, Wakayama Prefecture. In 1987, graduated from University of Tsukuba. Entered into the Buddhist priesthood while attending the University. As soon as graduating, began to practice Zen in Kennin-ji in Kyoto. From 1991, practiced in Engaku-ji. In 1999, became a Zen master of Engaku-ji. In 2010, took the post of the chief administrator of the Engaku-ji division of the Rinzai-sect of Buddhism. In 2017, took the post of the president of Hanazono University. His major literary works are [Learning the Wisdom of the Living Way from the Distinguished Zen Priests], [Zen Words to Enlighten the Life], Collection of Colloquy with Mr. Kagiyama Hidezaburo [To Live the One and Only Life] and others.

Pofile of Sahori Nobuya
Born in Osaka in 1933. Grew up in Nara Prefecture, and graduated from Tezukayama High School. Presently, he is enrolled in the Medical Department of Kobe University. By the influence of his father, who is an ophthalmologist, and embracing high esteem for the distinguished doctors such as Takagi Kanehiro, and Nakai Hisao, and having interest in life, he aspired to learn medical science. On the other hand, he opened his eyes to nihilism through witnessing the polluted water of former Yodo-river, and having the awareness to the problem, he began to focus himself to literary works. He began reading the literary works of Shigyo Sosyu from 18 years old, and during his entrance exam preparation period, he thoroughly read [Ikuru (To Live)], [Tomo-yo (Dear Friends)] and [Kongen-e (To the Origin)]. Afterword, mainly reading Shigyo Sosyu related books and he enthusiastically read Mishima Yukio, Origuchi Shinobu, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Abe Kobo, Uchimura Kanzo, Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Cioran, Camus and others. In the summer of 2016, taking his inner imbroglio as the opportunity, he visited Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumas and began the exchange with Mr. Shigyo Sosyu.

“Now, Seek after Miguel de Unamuno―Homage to Unamuno” Exhibition will be held at Embassy of Spain in Japan (Period: Sept. 12 ~ Oct. 9, 2018).
To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Establishment of Japan-Spain Diplomatic Relations and the 800th Anniversary of the Foundation of Salamanca University, “Now, Seek after Miguel de Unamuno” Exhibition will be held at Embassy of Spain in Japan. Miguel de Unamuno is the leading thinker, author and poet of Spain, and also was the president of Salamanca University. This Year being the anniversary year of Spain, under the auspices of Salamanca University and Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, and the cooperation of Embassy of Spain in Japan and Unamuno Resident Museum, we will comprehensively trace the personality of Unamuno through the photographic records and sketches which Unamuno depicted himself, and the acceptance and the transition of the translations of Unamuno’s literary works in Japan, and also introducing the city of Salamanca. And as homage, we will also be exhibiting the artworks of painter Toshima Yasumasa, who deeply cherished Unamuno, in combination with Unamuno’s words. We will cordially await for your visit to this exhibition.

”Spirits of Japan —The World of Nature in the Sight of Toshima Yasumasa—” Exhibition will be held.
At Toshima Yasumasa Memorial Gallery (Kojimachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), “Spirits of Japan—The World of Nature in the Sight of Toshima Yasumasa—“ Exhibition (Aug. 13 (Mon.) ,2018~ Dec. 1 (Sat.), 2018) will be held. Trailing the backlight in the Japanese soft and gentle world of nature, and guided into the depth of woods, Toshima has seen within the beauty of reefs his own life and death. What has the painter, who in his later years has tried to express the state of mind of Sumi-painting in Western painting, seen in Japan? We will follow his locus through the display of photographs of Buddhist image of Nara, which he has taken in his young days, and Noh mask made after he went over to Spain and others. We cordially await for your visit.

On May 17 (Thurs.), 2018, “Now, Seek after Miguel de Unamuno—Homage to Unamuno by the Japanese Painter Toshima Yasumasa” Exhibition has opened at “Empress Michiko Hall” in Spanish-Japanese Cultural Center, affiliated with Salamanca University (Period: May 18–June 15, 2018). At the Opening Ceremony, celebrating the 800th Anniversary of Foundation of Salamanca University, Vice-president Mr. Enrique Cavero Morán, First-secretary to the Japanese Embassy Mr. Suzuki Akira, Head-officer of Spanish-Japanese Cultural Center Mr. José – Abel Flores, Deputy-director of Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, Mayumi Shigyo have attended and they have given their congratulatory address celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Establishment of Japan-Spain Diplomatic Relation, the 800th Anniversary of Foundation of Salamanca University and the Opening of the Exhibition to Link the Interchange of both countries. Violinist Ms. Lina Tur Bonet also celebrated Toshima Yasumasa by playing Bach’s Saraband and other pieces. And there were many Japanese who came all the way from Japan to attend this opening ceremony. On 18 (Fri.), the next day, at Salinas Hall, traditionally used for the lecture of music in the historical structure of Escuelas Menores on the campus of Salamanca University, under the joint auspices of Salamanca University and Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, celebrating Unamuno and Toshima, concert by Ms. Lina Tur Bonet and Mr. Eduardo Fernández was held in the presence of the president and his wife of Salamanca University.

”Now, Seek after Miguel de Unamuno” Exhibition (Period: May 18~June 15, 2018, in Salamanca, Spain) will be held at Spanish-Japanese Cultural Center in Salamanca University in Spain.
To celebrate the Establishment of Japan-Spain Diplomatic Relation, and the 800th Anniversary of Foundation of Salamanca University, “Now, Seek after Miguel de Unamuno―Homage to Unamuno by the Japanese Painter Toshima Yasumasa” Exhibition will be held at Spanish-Japanese Cultural Center (Centro Cultural Hispano-Japonés in Salamanca, Spain). Toshima was greatly influenced by the literary works of Miguel de Unamuno, the leading thinker, author and poet of Spain, and continued painting the people and the scenery of Spain for nearly 30 years. As this year being the celebrating year of Spain, the Homage Exhibition to Unamuno by Toshima Yasumasa will be held, under the Auspices of: Salamanca University and Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, in Collaboration with: Embassy of Spain in Japan and Unamuno Resident Museum. The combination of Unamuno’s Words and Toshima Yasumasa’s Paintings will be exhibited, and the acceptance and transition of the translation of Unamuno’s literary works and others will be introduced. Exhibition will be held at “Empress Michiko Hall,” named after Her Imperial Majesty the Empress Michiko, of Spanish-Japanese Cultural Center, located in San Boal Palace of the sixteenth century, possessed by University of Salamanca. Furthermore, the Exhibition at Embassy of Spain will be held in September of this year. We will announce the schedule accordingly. We will be looking forward for your visit to the exhibition.

To celebrate the Friendship of the 150th Anniversary of the Establishment of Japan―Spain Diplomatic Relations, and the 800th Anniversary of Foundation of Salamanca University, one of the oldest University in Europe, in 2018, the religious poem by Miguel de Unamuno [The Christ of Velázquez] (Translation supervised by Shigyo Sosyu / Translated by Abe Misaki / Comment by Juan Masiá) will be on sale with the complete translation accomplished for the first time in Japan. This religious poem is the one, which Unamuno himself highly valued among his works. It is consisted of 89 cantos of religious poems, which Unamuno created meditating in front of [Christ Crucified] painted by the leading Spanish painter Velázquez. In these poems, the quintessence of religious spirit deriving from the Spanish mystic thought such as John of Cross, Saint Teresa of Ávila, and the soul of the Spanish Race are hidden within them.
