On Dec.1,2024, Periodical booklet on Culture・Art “ARTIS”(bimonthly) No.32 will be published.
On Dec.01, “ARTIS” (Latin for “art”) No.32, introducing the collection of our gallery from a variety of perspectives, will be published. In conjunction with the “Sword and Flower” exhibition, which opens on December 10 and runs through March 22,2025, the theme of this issue is the spirit of Bushido, or the “Sword” as manifested in art, and the “Flower” as the symbol of the spirit of bushido and its essence. In the well-received the director’s [Interview], he talks about the origin of the beauty of the Japanese “Sword” and the vital combustion symbolized by the “Flower”.
The opening painting, “Yamato Takeru” by Yasuda Yukihiko, is featured in the same issue, and the background behind the painting is narrated in an interview with the director. The [Creators] corner introduces the Gassan family, which has maintained the tradition of swordsmith for 800 years since the Kamakura period. In the [My Eyes] corner, which features contributions from visitors to the museum, we have received a poetic essay from the representative of Amane-ryu Mr. Houjyo Ryouu, a physical thinker and Genbujutsu practitioner, expressing the soul of Shigyo Sosyu hidden in the collection. Please take a moment to read it.
In the Shigyo Sosyu Collection Display Floor/Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, the same titled “Sword and Flower” Exhibition (~Mar. 22, 2025), will display swords by Gassan Sadatoshi of the Gassan swordsmith family, calligraphic works and paintings by Yamaoka Tesshu and Yasuda Yukihiko, and other works that represent the soul of Bushido and the way of life as sublimely as the “Flower”. We hope you will visit the exhibition.
If you are interested, we will distribute it free of charge and deliver it to you by free regular mail, so if you would like to receive it, please contact Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa (Direct phone:03-3511-8162).

From Sep.10, 2024, “Sounds of Italy” Exhibition is scheduled to open (until Nov.30).
[Omamori katana (Sword to defend oneself)] by Gassan Sadatoshi (part).
Under the title “Sword and Flower” (Dec.10,2024 – Mar.22,2025), the exhibition will feature swords by Gassan Sadatoshi, a member of the 800-year-old Gassan family of swordsmiths, calligraphy and paintings by Yamaoka Tessyu and Yasuda Yukihiko, and other works that represent the spirit of Bushido and its way of life as sublimely as “the flower”. In addition, to commemorate the centenary of Mishima Yukio’s birth on 14 January 2025, the exhibition will also include a calligraphy by Mishima, which was presented directly to Shigyo Sosyu. We hope you will be able to sense the souls of the bushi and nationalists who scattered like the flowers and the souls of those who devoted their lives to art through the collection of Shigyo Sosyu.
In ARTIS No.32, the same title as the exhibition “Sword and Flower”, the director’s interview contemplates the quintessence of the Sosyu collection: the “Sword”, which is used to carry out Gi (righteousness), and the “Flower”, which is a symbol of the combustion of life. We hope you will visit the exhibition and pick up a copy of ARTIS No.32.

On Oct.01, 2024. Periodical booklet on Culture・Art “ARTIS” (bimonthly) No.31 will be published.
On Oct.01, “ARTIS” (Art in Latin) No.31, introducing the collection of our gallery in various perspectives and receiving favorable reviews from the readers, will be published. This time, we will contemplate the durability and temporality of art from the perspective of “durable thought” of Bergson’s philosophy. In the well received the director’s [Interview], he talks about Bergson’s “creative evolution,” stating that art is not an act of creating something new, but rather an act of grasping the expansionary energy that persists in the universe. In [Free Project] “Here and Now,” we will hear from Mr. Kitagawa Kenji, a creator of artworks about durable creation, and highlight what underlies this act.
The opening painting is Yamaguchi Takeo’s unique work “Untitled” which repeats simple lines, and in [Creators] corner, we will introduce Nishida Kitaro. This time, in [My Eyes] corner where contributions from visitors are published, we received a philosophical review from Mr. Juan Macia, a Jesuit priest and leading scholar of the Spanish philosopher Miguel de Unamuno, on the calligraphy “Kan (Quietness)” by Shido Bunan, which was exhibited at the Shigyo Sosyu Collection “Zen and Beauty – A Gaze from Spain” Exhibition held last year at the Spanish Embassy in Japan. Please take a moment to read it.
At Shigyo Sosyu Collection Display Floor / Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa, the “Echoes of Italy” Exhibition (~11/30) is being held to great acclaim, showing all the works of Western-style painter Mr. Tanaka Noboru, who has newly joined the collection. We hope to have you visit the exhibition.

From Sep.10, 2024, “Sounds of Italy” Exhibition is scheduled to open (until Nov.30).
“Italian Landscape” by Tanaka Noboru
This time, entitled “Sounds of Italy” (Date: Sep.10, 2024 ~ Nov.30, 2024), we will exhibit works by Western-style painter Tanaka Noboru (1934-1982), who will be newly preserved and commemorated in Shigyo Sosyu Collection. According to Sosyu, Tanaka Noboru continued to paint melancholic Italian landscapes that remind one of Dante’s “The New Life”. However, Tanaka died young in 40s. This is the first time that works by this little-known painter will be exhibited. In the permanent exhibition, we will also exhibit works by Toshima Yasumasa (1934-2006), a Western-style painter who continued his painting career in Spain. We hope that you will be able to feel the works of these two painters who depicted the sounds rising from the earth.
ARTIS No.30 has the same title as the Exhibition, “Sounds of Italy,” and in the interview with Shigyo Sosyu, we will contemplate how to depict the sounds of the land, focusing on the works of the Western-style painter Tanaka Noboru, who has been newly preserved and commemorated in the Shigyo Sosyu Collection. We hope to have you take a look at the actual works and pick up a copy of ARTIS.

On Feb.01, periodical booklet on Culture・Art “ARTIS” (bimonthly) No.27 will be published.
“ARTIS” (Art in Latin) No.27, introducing the collection of our gallery in various perspectives and receiving favorable reviews from the readers, will be published on Feb.01. In the interview to the Director Shigyo Sosyu “The Art Talk,” the theme of “Utsushi no Bigaku (Aesthetics of Duplicate)” will be contemplated. “Duplicating” is the primordial act of art. Starting with the cave paintings of Altamira, creators fight to capture the great mystery by duplicating “something” in front of them. The more mysterious a work is, the more it can be said to live on in the lives of others.
The painting at [Opening page], features Yasuda Yukihiko’s “Tenarai (Practice handwriting),” and in [Column] Creators introduces Yasuda Yojyuro. This time, Mr.Kobayashi Daisuke, a businessperson who studied Kant at the University of Tokyo, has contributed a poem dedicated to Toshima Yasumasa’s [Katamuita akai tochi ― La tierra roja inclinada (The inclined red land)]. We invite you to taste the poetry born from a dialogue with a true work of art.
Shigyo Sosyu Collection Display Floor / Memorial Gallery of Toshima Yasumasa will hold “Utsushi no Bigaku-Jiso o miru (Aesthetics of Duplicate-Gaze the Ultimate Reality)” Exhibition (Feb.06 ~ Apr.20) under the same title as the ARTIS. We hope to have you visit the exhibition also.

This time, the exhibition titled [Aesthetics of Duplicate - Gaze the Ultimate Reality] (Display period: Feb.06, 2024 ~ Apr.20, 2024) will explore, what is “to duplicate,” which can be said to be the primordiality of art. And what is the “ultimate reality” that we gaze at when “duplicating” - the true figure hidden in the depth? This exhibition explores how we approach the “ultimate reality” through a variety of works. Please enjoy a wide range of works on display from painting of Hayashi Takeshi, Hirose Kou, Toshima Yasumasa, Ishida Jyunichi, and sketches and paintings by Yasuda Yukihiko, and wood carvings by Kumakawa Keiun.
